Leadership Comes With Sacrifice: When Your Team Grows, You Grow
Updated: Oct 7

A few weeks ago, while travelling to Bengaluru to conduct a training session, I had an interesting conversation with my cab driver.
He was just 25.
During our conversation, he told me that he loved travelling. He had already travelled to more than 10–12 countries on his own and wanted to spend more of his life travelling.
There was something refreshing about his clarity.
He knew what he enjoyed.
He wanted to explore the world.
He wanted to live for himself.
And I could relate to that.
I told him, “When I was a bachelor, I also wanted to travel.”
But life changes.
After getting married, travelling was no longer only about where I wanted to go.
It became about where my family wanted to go.
And eventually, I travelled with my family too.
But that happened almost 12 years later, after my business had started running smoothly.
That conversation reminded me of something we often forget when we talk about leadership.
Leadership changes the meaning of “I”
When we are individuals, we can largely make decisions around ourselves.
We can decide how we spend our time.
Where we want to go.
What we want to achieve.
What risks we want to take.
But when responsibility for other people enters our lives, our definition of success changes.
Family teaches us this naturally.
Leadership teaches us the same lesson professionally.
As an individual contributor, you can focus primarily on your own performance.
As a leader, you have to think about the performance, development and wellbeing of the people around you.
Your calendar changes.
Your priorities change.
Sometimes, your personal preferences have to take a back seat.
And that is where leadership truly begins.
The sacrifice is not about giving up everything
When I say leadership comes with sacrifice, I don't mean that leaders should ignore their own needs or continuously sacrifice their wellbeing.
The sacrifice is different.
It is the sacrifice of “me first” thinking.
You may have to give up the satisfaction of doing everything yourself so that someone else can learn.
You may have to spend time coaching a team member instead of completing the task yourself.
You may have to listen when you would rather speak.
You may have to give credit to your team when you could have taken it yourself.
You may have to invest months developing someone before you see the result.
That is leadership.
In corporate life, your growth eventually becomes your team's growth
An individual contributor can create personal achievements.
A leader creates the conditions for collective achievement.
That distinction is critical.
If you are the only person in your team who can solve a problem, you may be performing well—but you haven't necessarily built capability.
If your team can solve problems without depending on you every time, something more important has happened.
You have developed people.
And that is one of the clearest signs of leadership maturity.
Current workplace research reinforces this point. Gallup's 2026 research found that only 30% of Indian managers were engaged in 2025, down from 39% in 2024. It also highlights the importance of managers in creating clarity, coaching performance, recognizing contribution and connecting employees with purpose.
The implication for organizations is significant.
We cannot expect managers to build stronger teams simply by giving them targets.
We need to develop their ability to lead people.
Ask yourself one uncomfortable question
If you leave your team for one month, what happens?
Does everything stop?
Do people keep calling you for every decision?
Does work slow down?
Or does the team continue performing because you have built capability, confidence and ownership?
The answer tells you something about your leadership.
A leader's greatest achievement is not becoming indispensable.
It is developing people who become capable.
When your team grows, you grow
There is a beautiful shift that happens in leadership.
At first, you celebrate:
“I achieved this.”
Then you begin celebrating:
“My team achieved this.”
Eventually, you reach a point where you feel proud saying:
“They achieved this—and I helped them become capable of doing it.”
That is a different kind of success.
And it requires patience.
It requires letting go.
It requires coaching instead of controlling.
It requires sharing opportunities.
It requires giving people visibility.
It requires accepting that sometimes someone from your team may eventually become better than you at something.
That is not a threat to leadership.
That is the evidence of leadership.
The leadership lesson from a cab ride
That short conversation on the way to a training session reminded me of something I have experienced throughout my professional journey.
When we are alone, we can optimize life around our own goals.
When we become responsible for others, we have to expand our definition of success.
The same applies to leadership.
Your individual achievements matter.
But leadership begins when you start asking:
“How many people are becoming better because I am their leader?”
Because when your team grows, you grow.
When your people become confident, your leadership becomes stronger.
When your team starts taking ownership, your organization becomes stronger.
And when leaders are willing to sacrifice some individual recognition, convenience and control for the development of others, they create something much bigger than personal success.
They create leaders.
A thought for every leader
The next time you have to choose between doing something yourself and developing someone else to do it, pause.
Ask yourself:
“Am I choosing what is faster today, or what will make my team stronger tomorrow?”
That decision may look small.
But leadership is often built through these small decisions.
Leadership is not about how much you can achieve alone.
Leadership is about how much more your people can achieve because you chose to lead them.
